Waitematā Hip Fracture Team featured on ANZHFR HipCast after five consecutive Golden Hip Awards
Osteoporosis New Zealand is delighted to highlight a recent Hipcast episode featuring the Waitematā Hip Fracture Team in Aotearoa New Zealand, winners of the Australian and New Zealand Hip Fracture Registry (ANZHFR) Golden Hip Award for five consecutive years. The episode, released in March 2026, recognises the team’s outstanding and sustained contribution to high-quality hip fracture care.
In the episode, Dr. Min Yee Seow (Clinical Lead, Orthogeriatric Service), Vandhana Sharan (Orthopaedic Charge Nurse), and Kyleigh Pailman (Orthopaedic Physiotherapist) discuss how their multidisciplinary team has built one of the highest-performing hip fracture services across Australia and New Zealand. The conversation highlights the importance of coordinated teamwork across orthopaedics, geriatrics, nursing, and physiotherapy, as well as the cumulative impact of small operational improvements made over time.
The podcast explores a number of practical themes relevant to hospitals and clinicians seeking to improve outcomes for people with hip fracture. These include early mobilisation, managing delirium, patient flow, team culture, and the value of sustained quality improvement. Importantly, the Waitematā team also reflects on the lessons they have learned along the way and shares practical advice for other services looking to strengthen their own hip fracture care.
For ONZ, this episode is a timely reminder that excellent hip fracture care depends not only on clinical expertise, but also on strong multidisciplinary collaboration, clear systems, and a shared commitment to continuous improvement. These are themes that align strongly with Stronger Together: A Collaborative Strategy for Bone Health in New Zealand and with the wider goal of improving outcomes and experiences for older New Zealanders after fracture.
