Discussing a Diagnosis
There are many reasons people may become aware of their risk for developing osteoporosis and having fractures. You might have concerns after a family member’s fragility fracture, such as a grandmother’s hip fracture, or you may be following media coverage about bone health. Perhaps a celebrity you admire has experienced a fracture, or you’ve been prescribed medication for another condition, like rheumatoid arthritis, COPD, or breast cancer, known to impact bone density. Additionally, tools like the “Know Your Bones™” online self-assessment can highlight potential risks and prompt further action.
After a diagnosis of osteopenia or osteoporosis it is normal to have lots of questions. A discussion with your healthcare provider can offer clarity and support.
If you’re concerned about your bone health, here are some questions to ask your healthcare provider:
- “Am I at risk for osteoporosis or fractures?“
Start by discussing your risk factors, such as age, family history, lifestyle, and medical history.
- “Should I get a bone density scan (DXA)?“
Ask if a bone density scan (DXA) or other tests are recommended based on your risk factors.
- “What lifestyle changes can I make to improve my bone health?“
Ask about nutrition, exercise, the impact of smoking and alcohol and how other lifestyle choices can strengthen bones.
- “Are there medications that can help prevent or treat osteoporosis?“
Discuss possible treatments and their benefits and side effects.
- “How often should I have my bone density checked?“
Understand the frequency of monitoring and follow-up needed to manage your bone health effectively.
- “I recently fell over; should I be concerned about my bone health?“
Share any recent falls or increased frequency of falls with your healthcare provider. Discuss potential falls prevention strategies, such as balance exercises, home safety modifications, or referrals to services or specialists for further assessment.
Taking these steps will help you to confidently navigate discussions with your healthcare provider and be proactive about your bone health. By asking these questions and expressing your concerns, you can work with your healthcare provider to create a comprehensive plan tailored to your needs.
