Osteoporosis New Zealand FLS Toolbox

The Osteoporosis New Zealand Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) Toolbox is a resource designed to support the establishment and standardisation of FLS across the country. It provides healthcare professionals with essential templates, protocols, and processes that align with the 5IQ-based Clinical Standards for FLS and key performance indicators (KPIs).

Key sections of the toolbox include guidance on patient identification, falls assessment, and secondary osteoporosis investigation. It also offers educational materials for patients and GP letter templates. Additionally, describes the process to achieve International Osteoporosis Foundation Capture the Fracture® accreditation.

International Osteoporosis Foundation Capture the Fracture® Programme

In 2012, the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) launched the Capture the Fracture® Programme which has become a flagship initiative for IOF during the subsequent decade. The initial stated aims of Capture the Fracture® were:

  1. To be the global voice for secondary fracture prevention
  2. To drive national and international policy
  3. To ensure quality and provide support for FLS implementation, including getting started, improving, and becoming sustainable

In 2013, the Best Practice Framework was published to serve as the measurement tool for IOF to award Capture the Fracture® Best Practice Recognition. In October 2024, more than 1,000 FLS feature on the Capture the Fracture® Map of Best Practice, a figure which continues to grow

This includes FLS from New Zealand that collectively serve more than 90% of the population aged 50 years and over. The national FLS quality improvement programme is on track to ensure that there is universal access to IOF-accredited FLS in New Zealand by mid-2025.
