Biomarkers
Serum P1NP is a biomarker for assessing the effectiveness of bisphosphonate therapy, which works by reducing bone turnover. Successful treatment typically results in P1NP levels dropping below 35 μg/L.
P1NP is a useful biomarker for monitoring the effectiveness of bisphosphonate therapy—levels below 35 μg/L indicate successful treatment.
If P1NP levels remain at or above 35 μg/L after six months of oral bisphosphonate therapy, this may indicate suboptimal adherence to the medication or issues with absorption. In such cases, switching to an intravenous (IV) bisphosphonate may be more effective.
Blood samples for P1NP measurement can be arranged through your local laboratory, with no specific time-of-day requirements for collection. However, routine P1NP monitoring is generally unnecessary for patients receiving IV bisphosphonate therapy.
