Our colleagues at The Health Quality & Safety Commission are celebrating the success of New Zealand public hospitals in reducing the number of in-hospital falls that result in a broken hip. New Zealand appears to be the first country to achieve this on a national scale.
The paper published in the New Zealand Medical Journal this week highlights a sector-wide commitment to preventing harm and in reducing the number of falls resulting in serious harm in New Zealand, including reference to the roll-out of Fracture Liaison Services and establishment of the ANZ Hip Fracture Registry.
This is a very neat illustration of collaboration by the government agencies (HQSC, Ministry of Health, Accident Compensation Corporation), the learned societies and NGOs including Osteoporosis NZ.
